Configure plugin for sending mail (WP Mail SMTP) in WordPress

It is possible that one of the needs of your WordPress site is sending email using the "wp_mail()" function. Among others, it is usually used to send:

  • Contact forms
  • Confirmation messages (registrations, orders ...).
  • Notifications to clients.

We explain how to incorporate in WordPress the ability to connect to SMTP mail servers for sending your emails. For this, we will use the "WP Mail SMTP" plugin, because it is one of the simplest and most common.

Install plugin "WP Mail SMTP" in WordPress

"WP Mail SMTP" is one of the most common WordPress plugins for sending emails. We will proceed with the installation:

  • Access the Wordpress administration panel. Usually, this is found in the "wp-admin" directory, for example:

  • In the left menu, click on Plugins > Add new and in the search field enter "wp mail smtp":

  • Click on the button Install now of the WP Mail SMTP by WPForms plugin, and once installed, on the **Activat ** button that appears in the same place.

We have already installed the plugin responsible for the mailing, we proceed with your configuration:

  • Access Settings > WP Mail SMTP:

  • Fill in the following fields:

    • Sender's email: The email address that will appear as sender in the WordPress emails.

    • Name of the sender: The name that will appear as sender in the mailings of WordPress.

    • Email service: In this example, we are going to assume that you want to configure the mail server that you use in SW Hosting, select "Other SMTP". You can also choose to use a public server such as "Gmail".

  • Fill in the following fields:

    • SMTP Server: Email server address. You can check this information in SW Panel by accessing your service and clicking on "Service Servants":

    • Encryption: None.

    • SMTP port: 25.

    • Automatic TLS: Active.

    • Identification: Active.

    • SMTP user name: Email account address.

    • SMTP password: Password of the mail account.

  • Press Save settings to confirm the changes.

Generate test mail

Once configured, we will check the correct operation generating a test mail:

  • Enter the email address to which the test email will be sent.
  • Press Send mail.

If the shipment fails, check the settings entered.
